Green Hope had one of its strongest regional meets in school history yesterday. Both teams finished 5th overall, and the Falcons had 14 athletes qualify for the state championship meet. This total equals our highest-ever number of qualifiers.

Henry Pehr led our scoring for the boys, qualifying for two events individually. Henry won the 1600 and placed 4th in the 800, mounting a furious charge down the home stretch to grab the final qualifying spot. Michael Renard threw the discus more than ten feet longer than his previous best to set a new school record, grab 3rd place and advance, while Will Hoffmann also grabbed a bronze medal in the 400 meters.

The Falcons had two sprint relay teams advance, recording 2nd place finishes in the 4x200 and 4x100 relays. Both teams set new school records. Running the 4x200 was Will, Javon Galloway, Trevor Chin, and Kwabena Sarpong. The 4x100 relay team consisted of Blake Watson, Javon, Austin Jackson, and Kwabena. This year’s sprint relay crew has had an outstanding year, and so much credit (in addition to outstanding coaching) goes to our quartet of seniors for raising the bar for our program.

Elly Henes led the way for the girls, earning gold medals in the 1600 and 3200 meter runs. Elisa Sargent dropped five seconds off of her previous best time to place 4th and qualify in the 1600 meters. The girls 4x800 relay team, led by an outstanding anchor leg from Emily Jordan, placed third to qualify as well. Joining Emily on the relay were Katie Tomasi, Kayla Hall, and Sarah Taylor. The girls 4x200 and 4x100 relay teams just missed qualifying but set new school records with their outstanding races. The 4x200 consisted of Paige West, Lindsey Eastwood, Natalie Richards, and Danyel de Souza. Paige, Natalie, and Danyel also ran on the record-setting 4x100 team along with Carmen Curtis.

Danyel de Souza deserves special mention for finishing off her career with such an outstanding meet. In addition to being on the two relays, Danyel also set a new personal best in the 100 hurdles. As a senior, she set an outstanding example for her teammates and has made her mark on our program as one of the most accomplished female sprinters in school history.
