The Falcons continued their historic track and field season with an outstanding SWAC Championship meet last week. The girls won the team title for the first time in school history, and the boys finished a close 2nd to Panther Creek.

The girls were strong across the board, finishing third or better in 16 of the 18 events contested, and winning all but two of the track events. Kayla Foy, Lindsey Eastwood, and Elly Henes led the way for the girls, each winning two individual events. Kayla won the 100 and 200, Lindsey won the 300 hurdles and 400, while Elly won the 1600 and 800 (setting meet records in both). Kayla ran on two winning relay teams as well to give her four first place finishes total and earn conference meet MVP for track events. Kayla’s 100 meter time (12.06) set a new school record. Lindsey broke the school 400 record (59.52) and barely missed the 300 hurdles record. Lindsey also added a first place relay finish on the 4x100 team. Also recording an individual win was Lily Redick, who set a new personal best in taking the high jump. Lily also ran on the winning 4x200 relay.

Other athletes contributing high point totals individually included Alessandra Rodriguez (14 points - 2nd in 1600 and 3rd in 800), Anya Long (13 points - 2nd in triple jump and 4th in long jump), Payton Smith (12 points - 3rd in shot put and discus), and Mary Newby (12 points - 3rd in triple jump and long jump). The girls swept all four relays. 4x800 (Sarah Taylor, Emily Jordan, Shannon Kelly, Bailey Fowler), 4x200 (Paige West, Carmen Curtis, Lily, Kayla), 4x100 (Paige, Carmen, Brooke Kawas, Paige), and 4x400 (Bailey, Emily, Ale, Lindsey).

Henry Pehr matched Kayla’s feat of winning four events as he took the 1600 and 800, and ran on the winning 4x800 and 4x400 relays. Will Hoffmann was strong in all the sprint events as he took 3rd in the 100 and 200, and placed 2nd in the 400. Will also ran on the winning 4x400 relay. Jayquan Williams won the 400 and placed 3rd in the 800, while also running on the winning 4x800 and 4x400 relays. Mike Renard continued his outstanding season as he set PRs in both throwing events, taking 2nd in the discus and 3rd in the shot put to add 14 points. Finn McBride placed 3rd in the 1600 and 4th in the 3200 for 11 points, while Ian Delgado was 2nd in the 1600 and 6th in the 400 for 11 points. Winning relay teams included the 4x800 (Reed Blackman, Matthew Kehn, Jayquan, and Henry) and 4x400 (Will, Henry, Ian, Jayquan).

All told, Green Hope won 16 different events and had 18 athletes make all-conference. That is by far the highest combined total we have ever had. The girls’ team had 12 all-conference athletes, setting a new record for one team. To make all-conference, an athlete has to either win his/her event (or be on a winning relay) or score 15 points.
