News: Falcons send record 18 athletes to states
2016
Green Hope continued its successful postseason yesterday at the 4A Mideast Regional meet as our girls and boys teams both placed fourth in the team standings. We won four regional titles, set several school records, and saw lots of PRs. Athletes qualify for the state meet by finishing in the top four in an event. A school record 18 athletes will compete in the 2016 State Championships at NC A&T University in Greensboro.
The boys finished as the 4th place team with 75.5 points, following a very tight battle with eventual champion Broughton (83 points), Southeast Raleigh (82), and conference rival Panther Creek (81). The guys started off the day winning the 4x800 relay, with Matthew Kehn, Henry Pehr, Reed Blackman, and Ian Delgado racing to gold. Michael Renard had a huge day, setting new personal bests in both throwing events and qualifying for states in both. His discus throw broke his own school record. Finn McBride continued his strong season with a third place finish in the 1600 (4:25.44) . Will Hoffmann makes a return to the state meet in the 400, as he took 2nd (49.43). In the 800, we had three athletes compete and all three qualified for states. Jayquan Williams set a new meet record (1:52.43) in winning the event, while Ian and Henry placed 3rd and 4th respectively. The guys saved their biggest performance for last, as the 4x400 relay team of Jayquan, Henry, Ian, and Will won a thrilling race over Southeast Raleigh (3:18.34-3:18.61). The guys smashed the school record and ran a state-leading time.
The girls used a balanced attack, once again scoring points all over the place to take fourth overall (84 points) behind Southeast Raleigh (178), Leesville Road (95.5), and Wakefield (91). Like the boys, the girls also opened the meet with a win in the 4x800m relay by the team of Lindsey Eastwood, Katie Tomasi, Shannon Kelly, and Emily Jordan. Kayla Foy placed 3rd in the 100 dash to qualify. In the process, she took more than two tenths of a second off her previous best to set a lofty new school record (11.83). The 4x200 team of Paige West, Carmen Curtis, Lily Redick, and Kayla set a new school record (1:43.28) and placed 3rd. In the 1600, Elly Henes and Alessandra Rodriguez placed 2nd and 3rd to advance to states. Following them, the girls’ relay success continued in the 4x100 as the team of Paige, Carmen, Lindsey, and Kayla placed 2nd. Elly and Ale came back in the 800 to take 3rd and 4th. Morgan Adams rebounded from a tough 5th place finish in the 3200 last year to grab a qualifying spot this year, finishing 4th. Closing out the day, the girls made it four-for-four in relays as the 4x400 team of Lindsey, Ale, Bailey Fowler, and Emily took 4th place to advance. Though they just missed qualifying, Payton Smith (discus) and Anya Long (triple jump) had very strong meets. Both girls placed 5th in their events, setting new PRs. Anya’s triple jump mark (35'10) set a new school record.
